Foreign minister Urmas Reinsalu (Isamaa) spoke with his German opposite number Heiko Maas (SPD) over the phone on Thursday, principally discussing cooperation on the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Estonia holds the rotating presidency of the UNSC through May and has a non-permanent seat for 2020-2021. Germany is also a non-permanent member and holds the UNSC presidency in July.

Heiko Maas also briefed Reinsalu on a Franco-German plan for an EU recovery fund, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and the Estonian foreign minister thanked his German colleague for his country's help in evacuating Estonian citizens from Germany, which took place mainly via ship, as the crisis broke, and neighboring Poland closed its borders.

The pair also discussed European and global security issues, according to a ministry press release, and wished each other's nation strength in fighting the pandemic.
