Viru County Court sentenced Artjom, 38, to a conditional two years in prison for demanding that a Narva woman pay him €10,000 or he would make public an intimate video that included her.

According to a court ruling that entered into force on Monday, the man was convicted of extortion. He was sentenced to a conditional two years in prison. This punishment will not be enforced if he abides by the law for a period of at least two and a half years.

From last December through this April, the defendant's victim received threats from the defendant, who demanded the woman pay him sums ranging from €5,000-10,000 and threatened that if she did not pay, he would go public with an intimate video involving the woman, which he had received on a flash drive.

The victim did not agree to his demands and instead contacted the police. The defendant was arrested in early April and appeared before the court in mid-June.

According to Viru District Prosecutor's Office Assistant Prosecutor Sofja Hristoforova, prosecutors were unable to determine in the course of the investigation how the flash drive in question ended up in the defendant's possession.

"Thankfully the woman did not pay the accused any money, and thus the only damages she sustained were emotional," Hristoforova told ERR's Russian-language online news portal.

The court ruling was reached via plea deal.
