A member of the Estonian infantry unit Estcoy-10, Sergeant Herdis Sikka, was killed Monday afternoon in the Helmand province of southern Afghanistan.
The attackers used a homemade explosive, which resulted in severe injury. Fellow members of Estcoy-10 immediately administered first aid to the sergeant and a team of doctors transported him by helicopter to a hospital at Camp Bastion. Despite their efforts, the 20-year-old died a little less than two hours after the explosion.
No other soldiers were injured in the attack.
Sikka had been serving in the Defense Forces since 2008. He is the eighth Estonian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since the nation began sending missions there in 2003.
Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Minister of Defense Jaak Aaviksoo and Foreign Minister Urmas Paet have expressed condolences to the victim's family and friends.
