Wreaths laid in Tallinn and Tartu mark Restoration of Independence Day
Wreaths were laid In Tallinn and Tartu Thursday, marking the annual Restoration of Independence Day. The flowers were laid on a traditional memorial stone located at Toompea, in Tallinn. In Tartu, the wreaths were placed at the base of the Statue of Kalevipoeg, a monument to the 1918-1920 Estonian War of Independence.
The prime minister, state officials and members of the August 20 club were present. Club president Ants Veetõusme called to attention the fact that representatives for all political parties laid a wreath at the memorial stone in Toompea.
A ceremony was held in Tartu close to the monument to the War of Independence, with performances from the St. Mary's Church choir and theTartu. Tartu Wind Band. Mayor Urmas Klaas (Reform) and Joel Starkopf, head of intensive care at Tartu University Hospital also gave speeches.
