President Kersti Kaljulaid and Prime Minister Jüri Ratas (Center) took to social media to congratulate Finnish President Sauli Niinistö on his historic re-election on Sunday night.
"Sauli Niinistö, I am sincerely happy to congratulate you on behalf of the Estonian people and myself on your re-election as the President of the Republic of Finland," Kaljulaid wrote on Facebook. "I wish you success and strength for your new term."
According to the Estonian president, relations between Estonia and Finland are exceptionally warm and close. "We are closely intertwined as neighbors and friends, and as states and peoples, and we share the same values," Kaljulaid noted. "We are connected by a special bridge that is supported by our people's friendship and daily interaction."
"Congratulations on your re-election, President Niinistö!" Ratas tweeted in Finnish. "The support of the Finnish people is reflected in your landslide election victory. Once again, congratulations from me and all of Estonia to our friends in Finland."
Niinistö's win marks historic election result
Niinistö's re-election on Sunday made history in Finland, marking the first time in the history of the country's direct presidential elections that a candidate won in the first round.
Niinistö earned 62.7 percent of the vote in the election's first and only round on Sunday, followed by the Green League's Pekka Haavisto with 12.4 percent and the Finns Party's Laura Huhtasaari with just 6.9 percent of the vote.
The 2018 Finnish presidential election saw a voter turnout of 69.9 percent of eligible voters.
Niinistö's second term as president will begin in early February.
