South Estonian Rally city stage in Võru canceled, event in jeopardy
After South Estonian Rally organizers announced on Tuesday that the city stage of the rally in Võru would be canceled due to recent COVID-19 outbreaks in Estonia, the entire event, scheduled for August 22-23, is now in jeopardy.
Gabriel Müürsepp, main organizer of the rally told portal Delfi (link in Estonian) on Tuesday evening: "The Health Board (Terviseamet) is worried about spectator distancing and that is hard to ensure on the city stage. Separating areas with ribbons is just not considered enough."
Müürsepp added that organizers will continue planning the event, mostly with roads in forests, but there are doubts cast on the entire event.
He said: "We hope the Health Board understands that we want to host a round of the Estonian championships, not a world rally round. Their fear is that too many spectators will be present."
The rally is not to be confused with the full WRC Rally Estonia due to take place two weeks later.
The start of the South Estonian Rally was set to start at 6.11 p.m. on August 22 in in Võru. An updated schedule of the rally event will be announced shortly.
The sale of rally passes will begin on August 17, exclusively at Olerex gas stations. The price of a pass for Sunday's rounds costs €20, and a separate €10 ticket must be bought to gain access to Saturday's rally round.
