As recently as 10 years ago, Akel's exact birthplace was unknown, until it was discovered that the Kaubi cattle estate had another branch - the Nosi cattle farm, where Akel was born. According to the historians, there are many blanks in Akel's biography, for instance, how he ended up in politics after studying medicine and why he established his own party, the Christian People's Party, in 1921.

An exhibition showcasing Akel's life was opened in Halliste. The national postal service Eesti Post has also released a special stamp for the occasion.

"When Akel was arrested on October 17, 1940, I was a year and ten months old. I remember my grandfather only through my mother's memories which have been told to me. And by the time Akel was executed on July 3, 1941, our whole family had been deported to Siberia," Akel's grandson Jaan Treude told ETV.

Historian Küllo Arjakas noted that Akel also played a role in the Estonian sports movement, with both the Kalev Sports Society and the Estonian Olympic Committee which he presided functioning to this day.

"He was also connected to the construction of the Estonia Theater, the founding of our great "cultural temple," and the theater is still standing. So we can list a number of his achievements that also exist in the contemporary Estonia in one way or another," said Arjakas.

Friedrich Karl Akel was Estonian head of state, Riigivanem, from March 26 to December 16, 1924. His was the last of the birthplaces of the former heads of state previously unidentified and unmarked, reported ETV.
