Justice Chancellor Recovering From Stroke
Chancellor of Justice Indrek Teder suffered a stroke last week but is out of hospital.
Spokeswoman Mari-Liis Sesmin said Teder will need rehabilitation, however, uudised.err.ee reported.
Teder's duties will in the meantime be overseen by his deputies Nele Parrest and Hent Kalmo.
Teder, 55, took up the position in 2008 and is slated for two more years in office. Graduating from the faculty of law at the University of Tartu in 1983, Teder has been vice-chairman of the Estonian Bar Association and a partner for a legal firm. Between 1990–1992, he was a member of the Estonian Congress and he is a recipient of the fourth class Order of the White Star.
In Estonia, the chancellor of justice combines the function of the general body for petition and the guardian of constitutionality. The nonpolitical official is appointed by Parliament on the proposal of the president for a seven-year term. The chancellor submits an annual report to Parliament each year.
