State-owned railway infrastructure company Estonian Railways intends to use the 7.5 million euros in extra funding that the government has reallocated to it from this year's state budget in order to carry out large-scale projects in track overhaul.

"An overhaul of the railway between Tapa and Tartu is under way for the second year running, and work will continue [on this project] next year as well," Estonian Railways board member Toomas Virro told BNS on Thursday.

He added that next year, an overhaul will begin on the Tallinn-Keila-Paldiski/Riisipere track which will entail a replacement of traffic control systems.

On Thursday, the government approved changes to Estonia's state budget for the current year in order to adjust financing to conform to changed needs.

In accordance with the plan endorsed by the government, the extra 7.5 million euros for Estonian Railways will be taken from the untapped part of the National Road Administration's road maintenance budget.
