A Blue Flag was raised on Pärnu beach on Tuesday for the first time this year. The flag shows the beach is clean and safe to visit.

The flag was hoised by surfer Raimo Pull who cleaned the river bank and the beach last winter with his friends, reported ETV's "Aktuaalne kaamera" (AK) on Monday evening.

The young people saw the rubbish while walking on the beach and wanted to improve the situation.

Pull told AK it was a pleasant surprise that he was invited to hoist the blue flag.

Several beaches in Tallinn also qualify to fly the flag, which is an internationally recognised award.
