Top sumo wrestler Baruto, who is currently spending his two-week vacation in Estonia, will become the first honorary citizen of his home municipality, Laekvere.
According to Virumaa Teataja it takes the signatures of at least 50 residents of the small municipality in order for someone to receive the title. In Baruto’s case the number of signatories was significantly higher.
The certificate and a souvenir will be presented to Baruto on Saturday at the Muuga Manor Days.
Back on holiday from Japan, the athlete has already received to other titles this week: a decoration of the town of Rakvere and the Order of the White Star, Third Class, from President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
Baruto's professional sumo career started in 2004 and the athlete reached the top division two years later. He is currently standing in the ozeki rank.
