Medieval crime novel tops Estonian 2014 bestsellers list

The Estonian Publisher's Association has released its annual list of year's best-selling book titles. The 2014 list is topped by part five of Indrek Hargla's "Apothecary Melchior" medieval crime novel series.
The top 100 is dominated by Estonian authors and non-fiction. The best-sold foreign author - Sarah Bartlett with "The Secret Language of Fortune Telling. Decoding the Signs and Symbols of Divination" - ranks 14th. The most popular translation of a fiction was Paolo Coelho's "Adultery" (30).
Out of the 100 listed books, 30 are on practical topics. Twenty-one of these are by local authors. "Compared to previous years, when cookbooks dominated the scene, this year the popularity of healthy lifestyle and nutrition guides, and esoteric literature stands out more," said Kadri Urmet of the Publisher's Association.
There is almost an equal number of children's books in the list, nearly every second by an Estonia author.
The third most popular category is reference literature - encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases. Of the 16 titles, seven are by Estonians.
The consumption of e-books also continues to increase, with fiction and foreign-authors still the most popular choices. The most popular e-book of 2014 was Robin S Sharma's "The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO: A Remarkable Story About Living Your Heart's Desires."
The Publisher's Association was founded in 1991 and currently has 32 members.
