President Karis: Europe must do the heavy lifting on Ukraine security guarantees

Ukraine's security is primarily a matter of European security and European countries must bear the main burden in providing possible guarantees. However, U.S. involvement is also necessary, President Alar Karis said.
President Alar Karis held a video conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the leaders of Latvia and Lithuania to discuss European and Ukrainian security ahead of Sunday's meeting of major European powers.
The leaders reaffirmed that the most important priority is to provide Ukraine with certainty that Europe's support will continue and that Europe is also prepared to increase military aid to Ukraine.
President Karis emphasized that for the security of both Ukraine and Europe as a whole, it is crucial that the war ends with a just and lasting peace. To achieve this, in addition to providing further military aid, Europe must also increase its defense spending and readiness.
Karis welcomed the discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine led by the United Kingdom and France.
"Ukraine's security is primarily a matter of European security and European countries must bear the main burden in providing possible guarantees. However, U.S. involvement is also necessary," Karis said.
The president confirmed that Estonia is ready to engage in discussions on security guarantees. "However, these guarantees must be credible and deterrent," he added.
On Sunday, a meeting of 19 European countries will take place in London, convened by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Baltic states were not invited to the meeting, but ahead of the summit, a video conference was held between Starmer and the Baltic leaders.
