The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK) has decided not to terminate the activities of the foundation St. Alexander's Church of Narva, a spokesman for the EELK said on Friday.

"The Consistory of the EELK discussed on Feb. 7 and March 7 the proposal of the Ministry of Culture's Deputy Secretary for Cultural Heritage Tarvi Sits for the termination of the activities of the foundation St. Alexander's Church of Narva," spokesman Kalle Kõiv said. "The position of the church government is that at present, the termination of the foundation is not founded as the foundation's goal set in the articles of the association — restoring St. Alexander's Cathedral of Narva for it to be used as an international concert hall and cultural center while preserving church functions — has not yet been fulfilled."

Continuing with the renovation of the cathedral will be easier when there is a foundation which joins together all interested parties," Kõiv added.

Among the founders of the foundation are the Ministry of Culture, the EELK and the City of Narva.
