Police director: Volunteer assistant police, sea rescue part of PPA team

In recognition of International Volunteer Day, the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) is thanking all of its volunteers who find the time in their everyday lives to contribute to the security of Estonia.
"The Police and Border Guard team is [made up of] not only our officers, but also assistant police and volunteer sea rescue workers who are indispensable to us," said PPA Director General Elmar Vaher. "I am glad that volunteers find the energy and time to make Estonia a better and safer place. To find time to control traffic or prevent crimes in a day that is busy enough as it is — this deserves recognition."
The police encourage anyone interested in standing up for the safety of their community to join the ranks of their assistant police. Estonia currently has nearly 1,000 assistant police officers, who have volunteered a total of 100,000 work hours combined this year alone.
330 vounteers have also been involved in 62 sea rescue operations and helped dozens safely to shore.
International Volunteer Day is an international observance day first designated by the UN General Assembly in 1985.
