Gallery: National Language Day marked in Kadriorg
Around 70 mostly well-known Estonians read from from set texts in front of Kadriorg house, the seat of the head of state, in a 12-hour marathon from dawn to dusk Thursday.
The readings, which could be listened to and watched by the public, were opened by President Alar Karis.
ERR hosted an online dictation, broadcast by Vikerradio, to mark the event too.
Native Language Day, or Mother Tongue Day, is dedicated to the Estonian language and its preservation and coincides with the birth date of the national bard, Kristjan Jaak Peterson (1801-1822).
As such, it is a mandatory flag day for state, public and local government institutions, while private citizens, companies and other organizations are also encouraged to fly the flag on that day.
