Despicable Me 4 tops Estonia's 2024 cinema charts

In 2024, Estonian movie theaters attracted 2.47 million ticketed viewers, a 12.4 percent decrease compared to 2023. Family films and the domestic production Tulnukas 2 stood out with high audience numbers last year, according to fresh statistics from the Estonian Film Institute (EFI).
Cinemas generated €18.4 million in box office revenue last year, €2.5 million less than in 2023. Ticket prices remained unchanged, with the average cinema ticket costing €7.44.
"The decline in attendance likely stems from several factors: the challenging economic situation, general global uncertainty and the selection of films," said Eveli Raja, data analyst at the Estonian Film Institute.
A total of 446 movies were screened in cinemas (compared to 424 in 2023), of which 285 were new releases (282 in 2023). Meanwhile, 161 films continued from the previous year or were re-released (142 in 2023). Three films attracted more than 100,000 viewers, repeating the result from 2023.
The year's top ten most-watched films included eight international productions and two domestic films. Seven of the ten were sequels, two were based on novels and one on a comic book.
A total of 64 Estonian films were screened in cinemas, including 29 new releases and 34 older titles. Estonian films attracted 323,741 viewers, accounting for 13.1 percent of the market share, down from 21.8 percent in 2023. Among the new Estonian films shown in cinemas, there were 10 feature films, 16 documentaries, one animated film and two collections of short films.
