Estonian Embassy Honors Russian Political Victims
Representatives from the Estonian Embassy in Russia will visit the city of Vladimir on October 29 for a national day of remembrance, honoring the country’s victims of political terror.
Along with representatives from Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine, Estonian defense attaché Lauri Einre and economic attaché Silver Loit will attend a memorial organized by the governor of Vladimir district and a local catholic group.
The Estonian delegation last visited Vladimir in February to observe 126 years since the birth of Johan Laidoner, who served as Lieutenant Colonel in the imperial Russian army for nearly 20 years before becoming commander-in-chief of the Estonian army during Estonian War of Independence. When the Soviets intruded in 1940, Laidoner was deported to Russia and died later in the Vladimir prison.
Laidoner’s name is among the victims of political repression on the common memorial at Vladimir cemetery. The location of his actual deathbed is unknown.
