Composer Places Second at Prague Rostrum

Twenty-one-year-old Estonian composer Marianna Liik was runner-up in the under-30 category at the composers rostrum in Prague.
At the competition held last week, her "Mets/Forest" came second to Icelandic composer Ulfur Hansson's piece "So very strange." The main category was won by Polish composer Agata Zubel with "Not I," which she performed as vocalist.
Liik, born in 1992, is a native of Kärdla, Hiiumaa and is a second-year student studying electroacoustic composition at the Academy of Music. She is a student of Helena Tulve, who won at the rostrum in 2004.
The rostrum was held for the 58th year and is considered one of the most prestigious competitions. Estonia has participated since 1994 and has often had winners, including Mari Vihmand in 1996, Jüri Reinvere in 2000 and Ülo Krigul in 2007 in the youth category and the aforementioned first place by Tulve with an orchestral piece, "Sula/Thaw."
