First binturong cub born at Tallinn Zoo
The first binturong cub was born at Tallinn Zoo this month, the zoo said on Thursday.
Breeding pair Kawan and Pichaï were introduced a year ago, and an ultrasound last month confirmed two-year-old Pichaï was expecting. She gave birth to two babies, but the first was still born.
Currently, the mother and cub are doing well, the zoo said. At the end of the month, the baby will have its first veterinary examination.
The pair are not currently on display to the public.
Binturongs, also known as bearcats, originate from South and Southeast Asia
They have whiskers, paws like a bear and a tail similar to a monkey.
The creatures are listed as "vulnerable" on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The main threats they face are deforestation and illegal wildlife trade.
