Tiina Intelmann Becomes President of the Assembly of ICC
Estonian diplomat Tiina Intelmann will be appointed as president of the management assembly of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in New York today.
Intelmann's responsibilities will include managing the court's budget, electing judges and bringing alleged war criminals to face justice, ETV reported. She will replace Christian Wenaweser of Liechtenstein as President of the Assembly of States Parties, the management oversight and legislative body of the ICC.
The ICC in The Hague is the first permanent treaty-based international criminal court, established to reach consensus on defining genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
According to Intelmann, the court is currently processing 13 cases in Africa, in addition to preliminary investigations into alleged crimes against human rights during the Russo-Georgian war.
Tiina Intelmann has served as Estonian ambassador to the United Nations and Israel. She is currently posted as ambassador to Montenegro.
