Social Democrats Pursue Vote of No Confidence in Minister
The first day of parliamentary session started off with politics as usual, with the Social Democratic Party's faction looking to oust Minister of Justice Kristen Michal.
The 19-member faction is seeking allies from across party lines, needing 21 signatures to initiate a vote of confidence.
"We came to a common understanding that, in order to achieve a better climate in the new political year, we should initiate a process for the resignation of the justice minister,” MP Andres Anvelt told uudised.err.ee.
Fifty-one votes would be needed for a vote of no confidence. Such a decision would necessitate votes from the coalition parties, which together have 56 members in the 101-member Parliament.
The justice minister is part of an ongoing criminal investigation in which he is suspected of inciting a fellow Reform Party member to move funds from an unnamed source into the party's pockets in the form of private donations.
The minister has said he would resign from his post if indicted.
