Eurobarometer: More than 60% of Estonians consider EU membership a good thing
More than 60 percent of Estonians consider it a good thing that the country is a member of the EU — ten percent more than the EU average, results of a study show.
53 percent of EU citizens found that being part of the EU was good for their country, results of a Eurobarometer study show. While the greatest share of citizens of Luxembourg and Ireland considered EU membership a good thing, at 81 and 71 percent, respectively, just 32 percent of citizens of the Czech Republic and 31 percent of Greek citizens shared the sentiment.
A total of 63 percent of Estonians said that they considered being part of the EU a good thing, with only 7 percent of respondents stating that it was a bad thing. This level of support in Estonia has remained more or less steady since 2009, five years after Estonia joined the EU.
Similarly to last year, 60 percent of EU respondents found that their respective countries had gained from belonging to the EU, while in Estonia a total of 80 percent of respondents found that the country had benefitted from its membership in the union.
At the same time, however, 54 percent of EU respondents said that they believe that things are moving in the wrong direction in the EU, an increase of 13 percent year on year; in Estonia specifically, 37 percent of respondents agreed.
