Researcher: Europe should not choose between Ukraine and the US

It would be a mistake for European leaders to choose sides between the U.S. and Ukraine, as Europe's task is to restore dialogue between Ukraine and the U.S., said Matthew Crandall, associate professor at Tallinn University.
Crandall said that the meeting in London was primarily symbolic as it signifies the development of Europe's own vision for peace and recognition of Ukraine's role. However, the question remains whether the U.S. and Russia will take Europe's vision into account.
A second point is whether the London meeting would be seen as choosing a side between the U.S. and Ukraine.
"If such a decision has to be made, then we have all already lost. That is something no one wants. I think most are still trying to maintain that relationship," Crandall said. "The U.S. has been a very good ally to all of Europe. So has Ukraine. Why should we have to choose? No one is going to make a decision over one bad meeting."
Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur (Reform) stated that Europe must stand up for itself and the ability to support Ukraine. This is the only way to restore dialogue between the U.S. and Ukraine.
"The fact is that the U.S. is needed both in Ukraine's military support and in the peace process. And everyone actually understands that. And also in guaranteeing that peace," he said.
Crandall does not believe reconciliation is on the cards for Zelenskyy and Trump. That would require Zelenskyy to flatter Trump.
"To bow down and agree to whatever Trump says, technically, that is possible, but I am not optimistic that their personal relationship will improve," he said.
Europe must show strength so that the U.S. takes it seriously and Ukraine trusts it, but the question remains whether that strength exists.
