Paet Visits Mexico, Calls for Closer Ties
On a visit to Mexico late this week, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet told his Mexican counterpart José Antonio Meade Kuribreña that Estonia would like to intensify its political, economic and cultural ties with the Latin American country.
“Mexico, with a population of over 100 million and a position among the world’s leading industrial countries, offers many opportunities for cooperation,” Paet noted.
The boilerplate statement was relayed in an Estonian Foreign Ministry release during a May 8-9 visit to Mexico by a delegation of Estonian and Finnish entrepreneurs. The group also included Finnish Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb.
During his meeting with Kuribreña, Paet said that Estonia is now hoping for a reciprocal visit from a delegation from Mexico and noted that Estonia would like to increase the number of honorary consuls it has in Mexico from one to three.
“We have concrete plans to appoint honorary consuls in Tampico and Cancun in the near future,” said Paet.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry said that an agreement between Estonia and Mexico for the prevention of double taxation would soon come into force.
