New ERR Sports Chief Named

Rivo Saarna, current head of a PR company and a former ERR journalist, has been handed the task of leading ERR's sports department after Marko Kaljuveer was sacked at the end of March.

Saarna said he will not alter the course of the department much, concentrating on larger competitions and sports analysis.

He said one area needing focus will be ERR's relationships with sports federations, a topic which was cited as a reason for Kaljuveer leaving.

ERR director Margus Allikmaa said more balance and a broader menu of sports were needed in March, while Kaljuveer focused more on larger events such as airing of the football World Cup next month, which was in danger of being canceled due to a lack of funding.

The sacking led to a crisis in ERR, the nation's public broadcasting service, with many staff, especially in the sports department protesting the sacking. Allikmaa himself was on the verge of leaving, only narrowly receiving the support of ERR's supervisory board.
