Kelly Sildaru to compete in Otepää this weekend after return from injury
On Saturday, March 16, the Estonian Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Big Air Championships is set to take place at Väike-Munamäe Ski Resort in Otepää. This will be the first time the FIS Estonian Open has been held. Estonia's Olympic bronze medalist Kelly Sildaru will also be competing in her first competition after returning from a year's absence due to injury.
"The fact that this year's Estonian Championships will be held in conjunction with the FIS Open 2024 will also take the European Championships to a new level. FIS competitions have stricter requirements in terms of the rules and conditions, as well as bigger jumps and licensed judges from outside Estonia," said Kristjan Koll, head of the Estonian Ski Federation.
"Also, the desire to score points in the FIS series will attract more international competitors."
Sildaru, who injured her right knee in January last year, subsequently underwent surgery in February and has been sidelined since then.
"I've been out of competition for over a year while recovering from the injury. On the one hand, it has been a good period of rest, but on the other hand I have missed competing. I'm happy to be participating in my first competition [back] in my home country and I'm excited to see how it goes," said Sildaru.
The junior competition starts in Otepää at 11.30 a.m., while the women's and men's competitions begin at 1.30 p.m.
