Jõulumäe center may be open for skiing until April

While winter snows may be a fading memory in Tallinn and other parts of Estonia, one ski trail in the southwest of the country is doggedly carrying on, and hopes that conditions will remain suitable for skiing through to the start of next month.
Eido Tasalain, manager of the Jõulumäe tervisespordikeskus in Parnu County, told ETV morning show "Terevisioon" earlier this week that at present, a 2.5 kilometer ski track plus a sledding slope are currently still open; Tasalain said he hopes that at least one classic ski track (pictured) will be usable through to April.
Speaking to "Terevisioon" via video link, Tasalain said: "Fortunately, we had some very cold weather at the start of January, meaning we were able to make some artificial snow. We have opened up a two-and-a-half kilometer ski track, plus the sledging slope is also ready.
"The ski track is illuminated every evening until 9 p.m.," he added. "We also hope that at least one classic track will hold until April."
Tasalain said while peak season is over and skiing takes place now entirely on artificial snow following the natural snow-melt, even in forested areas, from mid-February, people are still coming to Jõulumäe to ski, at evenings and weekends mainly.
"We have announced that we will finally close the track on April 1, so it should last until then, unless we get a lot of rain in the meantime. Rain is the biggest dissipater of snow," Tasalain added.
Already planning for next winter, the Jõulumäe center has already stored up two kilometers' worth of snow, kept in cold storage for use then.
