Jüri Luik, who was just announced to replace Margus Tsahkna as Minister of Defence, said that he was motivated to return to politics by a proposal from IRL chairman Helir-Valdor Seeder as well as a statesmanlike sense of duty.

Luik, who was a member of the government on two separate occasions during the 1990s, said that he has devoted his entire life to serving the country in various positions. "For me, the official title isn't important, but rather whether I can do something for the country," he commented.

"It is out of a sense of duty that I came back [to politics]; I will give it my best," he stated.

According to the incoming defense minister, given the security situation and tensions connected to terrorism, the portfolio of the Ministry of Defence is of key importance, and he wants to take on this responsibility.

Should the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) council approve the change, Luik will take over the position from previous party chairman Margus Tsahkna.

Seeder affirmed that replacing the three ministers was in no way motivated by poor work, but rather his desire as party chairman to ensure that policy be clearer and the party better able to establish itself.

In addition to Tsahkna, Minister of Finance Sven Sester is to be replaced by Toomas Tõniste and Minister of the Environment Marko Pomerants is to be replaced by Siim Kiisler.
