At Tuesday's meeting between EU foreign ministers and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sven Mikser (SDE) thanked the U.S. for its commitment to European defense and welcomed the meeting taking place during the Estonian presidency of the Council of the EU.

"Transatlantic dialogue and cooperation are one of the cornerstones of security," Mikser said according to a ministry press release. "European countries are increasing defense spending and taking more and more responsibility in regional security issues, but it isn't said enough that we can always rely on American support — and that the Americans can always rely on Europe."

According to Mikser, the EU and the U.S. face common challenges that they must face together.

"We hope that the Iran nuclear deal is preserved and a solution outside the nuclear deal is found for concerns related to Iran," Mikser said. "Also, we would all like to have constructive relations with Russia, but it mostly depends on Russia's willingness and actions."

A meeting of NATO foreign ministers followed the meeting with Tillerson.
