Island ferries report 8 percent more passengers in 2017
Shipper TS Laevad ferried altogether 2.23 million passengers and 950,000 vehicles in 2017. This means their passenger numbers grew by 8 percent, and the number of vehicles by 9 percent.
TS Laevad is a subsidiary of state-owned Port of Tallinn (AS Tallinna Sadam). They operate the ferry routes between the Estonian mainland and the country's Western islands.
On the Virtsu-Kuivastu route between the mainland and the island of Saaremaa, TS Laevad ferried 1.66 million passengers and 710,000 vehicles last year. The route between Rohuküla and Heltermaa on the island of Hiiumaa had 570,000 passengers and 240,000 vehicles, the company reported.
Compared to 2016, both the number of passengers and vehicles on the Saaremaa route increased by 8 percent, while on the Hiiumaa route 7 percent more passengers and 15 percent more vehicles were transported.
TS Laevad also reported that their passenger numbers in December increased by 10 percent year on year to 145,200, and the number of vehicles by 11 percent to 63,600.
