Saaremaa Municipality is investigating the potential interest of five shipping companies in establishing a ferry connection between Saaremaa and Latvia, regional paper Saarte Hääl reported on Tuesday.

The municipality filed a query with Lindaliin, TS Laevad, Tallink Grupp, Kihnu Veeteed and Saaremaa Shipping Company, and expects a reply by Dec. 1.

The query sent to the shipping companies is part of the preliminary study into the possibility of a ferry connection to Latvia.

According to the contract for services signed between NGO Saarte Koostöökogu and OÜ Arenguruum, the survey is to be completed by mid-December. The compiler of the preliminary study said that the future of the route will depend first and foremost on the interest of ferry operators.

Representatives of OÜ Arenguruum and the Port of Mõntu are to meet with representatives of the Ports of Riga and Ventspils as well as authorities of the city of Ventspils in Latvia this week.
