Mountaineers Conquer Mexico's Highest Peak
On February 24, Raivo Plumer, Tõivo Sarmet and Jaan Reimand reached the summit of Mexico’s highest mountain, Orizaba, which peaks at 5,622 meters.
In total seven hikers took up the challenge to reach the top of the volcanic mountain.
By 10:30 local time, three Estonians and two Canadians had made it through the almost nine-hour climb. The trek included four hours on a debris slope and almost five hours on a steep glacier, which forced two of the participants to return.
The climb to Orizaba was part of a five-week hike through South Mexico and Guatemala undertaken by six Estonians.
Plumer and Sarmet participated in Estonia's first expedition to Mount Everest in 2003. They have formerly also taken the 8,201-meter Cho-Oyu in the Himalayas in 1998 and the 8,035-meter Broad Peak in the Karakoram range in 2001.
