President joins soldiers on NATO Velo bicycle tour

President Kersti Kaljulaid joined the NATO Velo cycling tour on Sunday. The president said that the race is a good opportunity to show the beauty of Estonia to those who only see barracks in their work.
The tour saw Danish, British and Estonian soldiers cycle from Tartu to Pärnu on Saturday from where they will go to Saaremaa on Sunday.
Around 30 soldiers will cover over 1,000 kilometers on bicycles.
President Kaljulaid said that the idea of the tour is to show the beauty of Estonia to people who otherwise only get to see barracks and training fields and would just be working.
"This summer might also be special because many have been denied the possibility of going on vacation in their home country, they have stayed in Estonia because the coronavirus situation has been milder here than in the UK," the president said.
"It is one way to showcase our beautiful – and for these people decidedly empty – country. Thinking of northern Pärnu County, it is the most sparsely populated areas in Estonia but also a place of great natural beauty," the president said.
