One drowning reported over midsummer in Estonia

On Wednesday, June 23, a national holiday, a man who had gone swimming while intoxicated drowned in Lake Uljaste in Ida-Virumaa County.
At 2.13 p.m., the alarm center (Häirekeskus) was informed that a drunk 42-year-old man had gone to Lake Uljaste with a friend. The man went into the water, but did not come out later. According to the report, the friend was on the shore throughout and watching the water, but after a time he could no longer see his companion.
Rescuers who arrived began a search and later found the victim, brought him out of the water, and handed him over to the ambulance. Attempts at resuscitation did not work.
Erkki Põld, chief of the Rescue Board (Päästeamet), calls on the public to refrain from swimming while under the influence and to prevent friends and family members from going near bodies of water if they are in the same state.
