MP calls for state legal aid for victims of family violence

Chairwoman of the Estonian parliament's social affairs committee, Helmen Kütt (SDE), has said Minister of Health and Labor Jevgeni Ossinovski (SDE) should make a proposal to the minister of justice to make state legal aid available to all victims of violence against women and family violence.
"I've heard many sad stories at support centers for women about women who have fallen victim to family violence and would need legal aid, but are unable to pay for it. At the same time, getting state provided legal aid maybe difficult now," Kütt said according to spokespeople for the party.
"The knowledge that a woman can turn to court to protect her own rights and maybe also the rights of children will provide an explicit message to perpetrators of violence and also to the public that the state stands up in defense of those who are weaker. A step like this will make our homes safer and reduce violence against women and family violence," Kütt added.
