The Tartu County court is deliberating convicted traitor Hermann Simm’s early release from prison on Wednesday. Simm was sentenced to 12 years 2009. He was found guilty of having sold thousands of confidential documents to Russian foreign intelligence service SVR.

The court will most likely deliberate Simm’s case behind closed doors. Though sentenced in 2009, Simm’s time in prison started on Sep. 19, 2008, and would end on Mar. 18, 2021. Simm is 68 years old.

Simm, who was a high-ranking NATO liaison officer and before his arrest held an advisory position, was found guilty of having sold thousands of documents to Russian foreign intelligence service SVR over a period of 13 years.

Beyond his conviction as a traitor, in a civil action Simm was found to have caused the Ministry of Defence damage in the amount of 20,155,000 kroons, or €1.38 million.
