German discount supermarket chain Lidl is seeking property in Tartu for the construction of shopping centers.

The law firm representing real estate management company MMS Property Solutions, a member of the Lidl Group, inquired from the Tartu city government whether the city was considering selling the property located at Anne 44, reported regional daily Tartu Postimees (link in Estonian).

In its response, the city noted that it has no plans to sell the property, which is currently home to the well-known public Anne Sauna as well as the district welfare department.

Urmas Ahven, director of the City of Tartu's Department of Urban Planning, Land Survey and Use, said that Lidl has expressed interest in other properties as well, including some belonging to established supermarket chain Rimi upon which construction has yet to begin.

Properties in which the German chain has expressed interest include lots on Jaama Street, Kalda Road and Anne Street.
