Estonian, Latvian presidents to visit Valga, Valka on Schengen anniversary
Latvian president Raimonds Vējonis and President Kersti Kaljulaid will visit the twin tows of Valka and Valga on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Schengen Area on Dec. 21. Representatives of the Estonian and Latvian embassies as well as the European Commission will also participate.
Dec. 21 marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement, which guaranteed free movement between Valga and Valka for citizens of both Estonia and Latvia. According to the agreement, permanent border controls on the border between Estonia and Latvia were removed, and the movement between the two towns was simplified.
On the occasion of the anniversary, the border between the two towns will be remembered by a show of old photographs. In addition, topical films will be shown at the Valga cinema, local schools will run a quiz, and a concert will take place on the border.
