Speaking at the War of Independence Victory Column on Tallinn's Freedom Square, Prime Minister Jüri Ratas (Center) said that Estonia would neither forget those who built the republic a hundred years ago, nor those who went to war in the name of preserving it.
"Thousands fell, and several times as many were wounded. These greatest of sacrifices were made for all our sakes, and for the sake of this day as well," Ratas said. "We will tell the generations that follow us of the heroism that immortalized our country."
Ratas said that the thanks of today's Estonia are to all of the generations and brave people who gave everything to make what was the collective dream of the Estonian people a reality.
Today, Estonia is secure, and it will remain secure because of the perseverance and the daily dedication of Estonians, and the its friends and allies.
"We won't forget their important contribution in the War of Independence, and we highly appreciate the presence of our allies in Estonia today. Beyond our own will and power to defend ourselves, our place in NATO and the European Union makes it possible for Estonia to look to our next century with confidence," Ratas said.
