Ice road may be opened between Haapsalu and Noarootsi
Beginning Monday, the Estonian Maritime Administration is halting ship traffic along the route of a planned ice road connecting Haapsalu and Noarootsi in Western Estonia.
The Estonian Maritime Administration is halting ship traffic in the part of Haapsalu Bay located south of Seasaar and east of the Rohuküla-Sviby shipping lane, Maritime Administration spokesperson Priit Põiklik told ERR.
The Estonian Road Administration has requested that, in case of appropriate weather conditions, ship traffic in the area of the planned Haapsalu-Noarootsi ice road be halted until the latter's use is concluded.
Before opening an ice road, the conditions of the ice cover along the planned route must be thoroughly investigated. Among other requirements, the minimum required thickness for the ice throughout the route is 24 centimeters.
Thus far, no official ice roads have been opened in Estonia this winter.
