North District Prosecutor's Office has sent a case to court in which a 25-year old man, who hit two police officers with his car in the process of his arrest, has been charged with attempted murder.
According to the indictment, the man was selling narcotic drugs on February 19 in the parking lot of a store in Lasnamäe, Tallinn.
"The activity was not finished as criminal police, who had caught wind of illegal activity, began to detain him. To avoid having his large quantity of narcotic taken from him, the suspect decided to flee the scene in his car," District Attorney Natalia Miilvee described.
The Prosecutor's Office has determined that the suspect did indeed see the two police officers standing in front of the car and instead of stopping and obeying orders, the man deliberately tried to hit them, the District Attorney said.
One of the officers was seriously injured and the second officer suffered minor injuries.
After running over the police officers, he fled the scene. "The defendant had to have understood that his actions would have dire consequences. For that reason, the Prosecutor's Office handles this case as attempted murder. As an aggravating circumstance, the young man fled the scene, which is why he was ultimately charged with attempted murder," Miilvee explained.
According to criminal proceedings, the man has handled drugs before and on February 19 he was in Lasnamäe to hand over cocaine to a buyer. In detention, large quantities of drugs were found in his car and also in his apartment. Along with attempted murder, the man was also charged with illegal handling of large quantities of drugs.
The court has set the preliminary hearing date to July 6.
