The senate of the University of Tartu on Wednesday appointed professor Tõnu Lehtsaar acting rector of the university following the unexpected death of rector Volli Kalm last week.

TALLINN, Dec 27, BNS - The senate of the University of Tartu on Wednesday appointed professor Tonu Lehtsaar as the university acting rector.
University academic secretary Andres Soosaar told BNS that the senate decided at an extraordinary meeting to appoint Lehtsaar acting rector of the university for no longer than through Dec. 23, 2018.
According to Soosaar, the university council is to decide when to hold elections for a new rector, adding that the council will not convene anymore before the end of the year.
On Dec. 24, the rectorate of the university unanimously proposed to the senate to appoint Lehtsaar acting rector of the university. Lehtsaar currently works as the chaplain and counselor of the university staff.
University of Tartu rector Volli Kalm died unexpectedly after collapsing while skiing in Otepää on Saturday; he was 64 years old.
Kalm's funeral will be held at the university on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m.
