Former minister of foreign affairs and 2016 presidential candidate Marina Kaljurand is considering going into politics. Kaljurand told ERR on Tuesday that she'll decide towards the end of summer or early in the fall this year whether or not to join a party.

"I'll need to decide at the end of the summer, or early in the fall. I'm thinking about my future very seriously," Kaljurand said. "As we're coming closer to the Riigikogu elections, naturally I have to decide if I want to go into Estonian politics, and if people want me there."

The next Riigikogu elections are set for March 2019.

Kaljurand recently left her position at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ERR News reported). "I don't exclude the possibility that someday I might return to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," she said. "As far as politics is concerned, there won't ever be a point in speculating too far ahead or to say no, but at the moment I'm not planning to join any particular party, I need to get used to life outside the ministry."

Still in November last year, Kaljurand told the Baltic News Service that she didn't have any political ambitions.

Kaljurand's employment agreement with the Foreign Ministry expired on Dec. 31 last year, although she will continue as chairwoman of the Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace. Kaljurand had worked for the ministry since 1991.

By far the most popular candidate for president of Estonia ahead of the 2016 presidential elections according to poll results, Kaljurand failed to make the second round of the election of the president in the parliament after the Reform Party decided to throw its entire weight behind party honorary chairman Siim Kallas. Kaljurand was first nominated for president by people belonging to the Reform Party leadership.

Following the elections, Kaljurand returned to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a part-time adviser on cyber security.
