Kanepi Passes on Fed Cup
Estonia's top tennis player, Kaia Kanepi, has said that she will not be joining her country's team at the upcoming Fed Cup.
The 26-year-old had been expected to support her female compatriots as they face fierce challengers from Austria and Bulgaria in the round-robin stage of the cup's Europe/African zone competition at the beginning of February.
“It doesn't fit into my plans now because I'm playing in Paris, which is indoors. The Fed Cup in Israel is outdoors, and it ends one day before Paris starts,” Kanepi told ERR radio.
“The most important thing right now is singles games and individual tournaments. I have played in the Fed Cup quite a lot. Let the younger [athletes] get some experience too,” she said.
After winning the Brisbane International earlier this month, Kanepi had a relatively poor result in the Australian Open, where she was knocked out of the singles event in the second round.
