WRC season to continue in Estonia in September, state to allocate funds

02.07.20 ... The organizers of Rally Estonia and WRC promoter GmbH confirmed on Thursday that the currently suspended World Rally Championship (WRC) season will continue in September with Rally Estonia. The government has allocated a total of €2.5 million to support the WRC round.

Estonian 3x3 teams made it to European Basketball Championship finals

01.07.20 ... Estonian teams will take part in the 3x3 European Basketball Championship in Antwerp, Belgium in September. Estonia's women's team will play in the Championship for the first time.

Basketball Association wants capacity of Baltic tournament raised to 1,500

30.06.20 ... The Estonian Basketball Association has requested raising the guest limit of their exhibition Baltic Chain tournament in July from the allowed 1,000 people to 1,500.

State real estate: indoor football hall would suit Maarjamäe

30.06.20 ... State real estate company Riigi Kinnisvara AS (RKAS) has assessed the location of the projected indoor football training hall near the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and deemed it suitable for development.

Rally Estonia organizer: Estonian WRC round will be decided this week

29.06.20 ... There have been rumors over the last few weeks that the suspended World Rally Championship (WRC) season will continue on September 4-6 with a round in Estonia. Urmo Aava, the chief organizer of Rally Estonia, has now met with WRC promoter GmbH but no official announcement has been made.

Jüri Vips to join Finnish F3 KIC Motorsport team

29.06.20 ... Estonian Formula Three driver Jüri Vips will compete in the ranks of Finnish KIC Motorsport next season, in the hopes of collecting enough points to be licensed to eventually compete in the top-flight Formula One series.

Ott Tänak confirms his participation in Viru Rally in July

26.06.20 ... The domestic rally season in Estonia will begin on July 4, when Viru Rally will begin in Lääne-Viru County. On Friday, reigning world champion duo Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja confirmed their participation and will compete in their Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC.

Kontaveit and Zopp to play in Tallinn in July, Kanepi pulled out

26.06.20 ... Estonian top tennis players Anett Kontaveit (WTA 22) and Jürgen Zopp (ATP 540) will participate in a doubles tournament set to take place on June 8 in Tallinn.

Rally Estonia: We have been made an offer to host WRC round in Estonia

18.06.20 ... On Wednesday, the team behind Rally Estonia said that they have been made an offer to host a round of the World Rally Championships (WRC) in Estonia. Prime Minister Jüri Ratas said the government is ready to allocate additional funds from the state budget to support the potential WRC rally.

Justice minister opposes plans to build football hall by communism memorial

16.06.20 ... Justice minister Raivo Aeg (Isamaa) has hit out at plans to construct an indoor training hall for professional football team Levadia, saying that its Maarjmäe site, in Tallinn, would be too close to the Memorial to the Victims of Communism.

Rally DirtFish: Speculation of WRC round in Estonia not true

15.06.20 ... According to the organizers of Rally DirtFish, which is set to take place in the South Estonian town of Otepää in August, the speculation around the rally becoming a round in the FIA's mission to finish the 2020 season is not true.

Ministry greenlights motorsport school

15.06.20 ... The Ministry of Education and Research has given its blessing to the Estonian motorsport academy which will be the first hobby school in Estonia dedicated purely to motorsport.

WRC: Estonian Rally DirtFish could be a WRC round in revised 2020 calendar

11.06.20 ... The FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) has already canceled five and postponed two of it's rounds in the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Head of WRC promoter GmbH, Oliver Ciesla said there are alternative options being considered, one of which is Rally DirtFish, set to take place in August in South Estonia.

Defense Forces cutting Sports Platoon

11.06.20 ... The Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) have decided to cut the Sports Platoon established as part of its Support and Signal Battalion in 2006, which included 18 top athletes.

Tänak and Neuville to participate at Rally DirtFish in their WRC cars

09.06.20 ... Hyundai Motorsport announced on Tuesday that they will bring two WRC Rally 1 class cars to Estonia to compete at Rally DirtFish on August 7-8, driven by their two representative drivers: reigning world champion Ott Tänak and winner of Rally Monte Carlo 2020 Thierry Neuville.

Wales Rally GB next WRC round canceled due to coronavirus

09.06.20 ... Britain's World Rally Championship round Wales Rally GB has been officially canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This marks the first time the event has been canceled in 50 years.

Rally Finland canceled for 2020 season

03.06.20 ... With the remainder of the World Rally Championship (WRC) season still in doubt, the next scheduled round due to take place in Jyväskylä, Finland, has now been called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers of the competition announced on Wednesday.

Estonian football league match broadcast internationally for first time

25.05.20 ... Sunday's Estonian football league (Premium liiga) match between Viljandi Tulevik and FCI Levadia was live broadcast in Ukraine and various Balkan countries, marking the first time an Estonian league match has been broadcast internationally.

Basketball NT training together in "sports city" until end of summer

25.05.20 ... The Estonia men's national basketball team will have joint training sessions in the Nord Cramo Sports Center until the end of the summer. The so-called sports city, unique in Estonia, will house 30-40 players vying for places in the national squad.

Premium liiga players all test negative for coronavirus

13.05.20 ... The Estonian Football Association (EJL) on Wednesday announced that the coronavirus tests of Premium liiga footballers and coaches, 28 referees and ten managing directors all came back negative.

Government rejects EAL's funding request for organizing a WRC test rally

12.05.20 ... The Estonian Autosport Union (EAL) in April proposed to use the money earmarked for Rally Estonia for fulfilling other federation goals. However, the Ministry of Culture says that the distribution of targeted subsidies cannot be altered.

Major event attendance in July, August to be capped at 1,000

12.05.20 ... According to Minister of Education and Research Mailis Reps (Center), it was agreed at a government committee discussion on Tuesday that attendance for major events in July and August should be capped at 1,000. Gyms and swimming pools are also set to reopen next week.

Sõõrumaa: Sport needs €100 million more per year to ensure public health

President of the Estonian Olympic Committee (EOC) Urmas Sõõrumaa says that the Estonian sports system needs at least €100 million additionally per year to perform its main task as promoter of public health, and suggested distributing the extra money via a future Health Fund and the defense forces.
