Football Association asks UEFA for extension on venue confirmation

25.09.20 ... The governing body of European football, UEFA, gave Estonia until September 24 to confirm the venue for home matches in the European Championships qualifying rounds. The government did not reach a decision on quarantine-free travel for athletes on Thursday however, leading the Estonian Football Association (EJL) to apply for an extension.

Kontaveit and Kanepi could meet in third round of French Open

25.09.20 ... This year's French Open, set to begin on Monday, will see Estonian top tennis player Anett Kontaveit (WTA 21st) face off against French Caroline Garcia (WTA 45th), who she recently beat in the Italian Open, in the first round.

Sports journalists: Doping penalties in Estonia far too lenient

24.09.20 ... Punishments for sports doping activities in Estonia are ridiculously light, sports journalests Peep Pahv of news portal Delfi, and director of ERR's sports portal Maarja Värv, said Wednesday, following the fall from grace of former national ski coach Mati Alaver.

Penal Code amendment allows blood doping athletes to be tried for fraud

24.09.20 ... The ski doping scandal that enveloped Estonia's national ski team from last year also tested the Penal Code in seeing if sufficient investigation, and punishments for offenses connected to blood doping, would be carried out. A section of the Penal Code does specify doping cases, but can only be used to try distributors or producers. As a result, the code is to be amended.

Judge: Doping abuse a matter of strong public interest

24.09.20 ... Top athlete blood doping cases are a matter of great public interest, said Janek Laidvee, a judge from the third-tier Tallinn administrative court, whose decision led to the disclosure of disgraced ski coach Mati Alaver's criminal file to the public.

Olympic committee president: Alaver guided by more than self-interest

23.09.20 ... Mati Alaver did not participate in the doping scheme only out of self-interest, he also felt proud when Estonians achieved something, President of the Estonian Olympic Committee (EOK) Urmas Sõõrumaa told Vikerraadio's "Uudis+" program.

Ski coach Alaver arranged 2017 mystery package drop at Tallinn Airport

A former ski coach and Estonian ski association director has said that, at ski coach Mati Alaver's request, he met a foreign citizen at Tallinn Airport in February 2017, and was handed a package to be forwarded to skier Karel Tammjärv. Alaver is at the center of an international ski doping ring as revealed by recently declassified court materials; Tammjärv was one of three active skiers charged with blood doping activities at the world championships in Austria in 2019.

Two Estonian footballers join major European club youth academies

22.09.20 ... Monday saw two signings of young football players from Estonia, with 17-year old players Maksim Paskotši and Oliver Jürgens signing with Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan respectively.

Football Association wants entry exemption for players from third countries

22.09.20 ... The Estonian Football Association (EJL) will apply for a government exemption allowing third country football national teams to enter Estonia for UEFA European Championships qualifying matches without the 14-day coronavirus isolation requirement.

Saints lose to Raiders in historic game in Las Vegas, Hunt gets a tackle

22.09.20 ... Estonian defensive lineman Margus Hunt and his home club New Orleans Saints travelled to Las Vegas for the first ever NFL regular season game there in NFL history after the Oakland Raiders were relocated this season, falling to the home team 24:34.

21.09.20 ... The Italian Serie A season kicked off on Saturday with Estonian national football team captain Ragnar Klavan's Cagliari Calcio starting the new season with a 1:1 draw against Sassuolo. Klavan was taken off after the first 45 minutes after suffering an injury.

Two Esiliiga football matches postponed due to positive tests

21.09.20 ... Two matches in the Esiliiga, second strongest football league in Estonia, were postponed on Monday due to positive coronavirus tests.

Basketball fans across Estonia set Guinness record for free throws

21.09.20 ... For the 100th anniversary of Estonian basketball, the Estonian Basketball Association organized a nation-wide free throw shooting event on Saturday, aiming to hit 100,000 shots on 71 courts across the country for a Guinness world record.

Tänak struggles going into day two of Rally Turkey

Day two of WRC Rally Turkey started off badly for reigning champion and recent Rally Estonia victors Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja (Hyundai) after a steering system fault cost the pair valuable time on Friday, the opening day, causing them to pull out. Tänak also expressed his dissatisfaction to race organizers over the amount of dust thrown up by the cars.

Kontaveit out of Italian Open, picks up injury

Estonian sports teams could play home games in other countries

The Estonian women's national football team is scheduled to face Russia on September 22 at home, but due to government coronavirus restrictions, the match will instead be played in Jurmala, Latvia. Mihkel Uiboleht of the Estonian Football Association (EJL) said the men's team and Estonian clubs could face a similar fate.

Estonian Formula 2 driver Jüri Vips (DAMS) has had a slight shadow cast on his career-best seventh-place qualification spot at the Feature Race, a supporting race for this weekend's Tuscan Grand Prix at the Mugello circuit in Italy, after a penalty has pushed him three places down to 10th on the grid.

Coronavirus-stricken Nõmme Kalju knocked out of Europa League

11.09.20 ... Estonian football club Nõmme Kalju's UEFA Europa League season came to an end in Slovenia, where the side lost four-nil to NŠ Mura. The match had been initially set to take place in Estonia, but after positive COVID-19 tests for both teams, Estonia's Health Board (Terviseamet) canceled that meeting, depriving the team, which is now at the center of its own coronavirus outbreak, of home-field advantage.

Spectator fell ill with COVID-19 while at Rally Estonia

09.09.20 ... A race-goer at last weekend's WRC Rally Estonia has contracted COVID-19, the Health Board (Terviseamet) reports. The event applied stringent coronavirus regulations, including separating spectators into batches and requiring mask-wearing, which the individual followed, but they still fell sick while the race weekend was in progress.

Estonia's sole representative in the National Football League, defensive linesman Margus Hunt, was temporarily "fired" from his new team, the New Orleans Saints, only to be later reinstated. The development happened as teams scramble to get their squads cut down to 53, the maximum permitted, ahead of the new season starting on Sunday.

Tänak and Järveoja win WRC Rally Estonia

04.09.20 ... Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja have won their home rally and the inaugural full-calendar WRC event in South Estonia. The pair took an early lead Saturday and did not let up through the course of Sunday with a time of 1:59:53.6, despite a strong challenge mounted by Irish driver and fellow Hyundai teammate Craig Breen and his co-driver Paul Nagle, who were 22.2 seconds behind with a time of 2:00:15.8.
